Last week I was unable to make weekly purchase of my weekly essentials which primarily is about buying vegetables. I had a critical issue to address at office, and it demanded my complete attention. Well that is the sad part of my job, I never know when the emergency comes calling. So as it panned out, I could not go out and make purchase of vegetables and all that I was left with was few ripe tomatoes that kept staring back at me as I pulled out my vegetable tray, asking for my attention.

At this time of year in Pune (month of October), rains would have fast shut its door like a whimsical, adamant teenager who is difficult to persuade and winters though seem to be around the corner, would still be afar. Sensing this as an opportunity, heat and humidity would torment us for the month of October. However, this year, we are witnessing a turnaround. The rains has picked up in an unprecedented way by the end of its season and I am enjoying it.

I am often faced with a dilemma in mornings. Pranay and I, often enjoy some cookies with a cup of coffee or milk. However, the cookies that we often buy from market are not up to our liking. So we decided to start baking some fresh cookies for us that would last for 3-4 days before we bake them again. I also carry these cookies in a small container at my work, so that I can munch on them during evening snacks.

At the onset let me admit that neither am I sure about the origins of this recipe, nor do I know much about the evolution of this recipe. What struck me, however, was the fact that I read in an article about Bhindi (Okra) and Rajasthan. Okra is one of the most famous and popular vegetable crop that is cultivated in Rajasthan. This article piqued my interest and I started reading more about the topic.

What happens, when a Konkani visits Kerala for vacation? Well, it is like a home coming which is what I experienced when I took a vacation to Kerala last year. The breath taking beauty of coastlines, canvas of beaches, houses built of laterite stones and the striking resemblance of food items used in the cuisines. The list includes fishes, coconuts and many more food items. However, in today’s blog I would like to discuss about a fruit that is also a vegetable. You must have guessed it by now that I am referring to jackfruit.

Being an Indian my obvious choice of entertainment like millions of other Indians have been cricket and Bollywood. Let me talk about Bollywood here. While growing up national broadcaster Doordarshan was the only source of entertainment, and weekly they used to telecast some Bollywood movie that I would eagerly wait for. Sometimes they would telecast some serious meaningful cinema by directors like Guru Dutt, Shyam Benegal and I was ill-equipped back then to understand their movies and would go to sleep half way through.

I love to sleep. In fact my husband is jealous of my sleep, more so when he is prone to even slightest of disturbances like neighbor’s barking dog. I agree barking dog could give many of you sleepless nights especially when other stray dogs decide to join the party and all these canines end up howling and whining entire night for no reason. I do not get disturbed by these unearthly howls and still manage to get sound sleep.

Growing up, we all have our personal likes and dislikes regarding food that influence our eating habits. I had developed aversion for lactose in my childhood and I shied away from milk, curd, paneer (cottage cheese), cream and other dairy products. Initially, mom used to cajole me into eating these dairy products, but later she gave up and I ended up not eating these for my entire childhood.
